You can read the latest theories about how effective it is to build on strengths, but I prefer the simple verification called "there are signs all around us if we would only read them."

Mother Teresa never tried to develop her pitching abilities so she could try out for the Yankees, the Williams' sisters are not going into professional bowling, and closer to home HR Directors are not vying for the CFO job. That's okay - in fact it's better than okay because the best ROI comes from building on what we're good at and like doing.

Oh sure, you need a plan for weaknesses or "areas of opportunity" but that can come as you choose strategies for enhancing your strengths. Here's an example... The leader who is very strong in written communication may need to do a better job in holding people accountable. So, they can use and enhance their writing strength by documenting accountabilities for subordinates.

It's a simple but important approach to enhancing performance. You can do it and you can help others in your organization use this approach. However, those who want to try out for the Yankees - they're on their own.
