In our society, taking a break from work is either an unknown practice or frowned upon as a “waste of time and resources.”
However there is power in taking a “brain break” every now and then, says Donna Long, my business partner and friend. During these brief breaks of time, Donna advises that we tune out of stressful situations and tune our brains into our favorite relaxing music... “Take it ease-ay, take it ease-ay.” That’s what I hear anyway. Another possibility is to merely have some quiet time, allowing the brain and spirit to reenergize.
Now, you may picture yourself taking a siesta under a tree with a large straw hat over your eyes. This may be a more elaborate approach, but can be achieved if you use your imagination. By closing your eyes and simply looking at a picture or out a window, you can transport yourself to a personal, quiet place of your own.
A “modified siesta” just once or twice a day for a few minutes can have tremendous payout in energy, productivity and clear thinking.
For those of you in leadership roles, how about suggesting and encouraging modified siestas? If you foster stress reduction you will be not only be doing a good thing for your employees, but you will also see increased productivity and possibly an improvement in unwanted employee turnover. |
